Agriculture Ministry continues to monitor current rainfall

Government, GINA, December 29, 2007

The Ministry of Agriculture remains vigilant of the current year-end rainfall and is putting measures in place to bring relief to those affected, especially in the low-lying communities of the Mahaica and Mahaicony creeks.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud and a team from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) today visited several communities of the two creeks to listen to the concerns of persons affected and to access what needs to be done to mitigate flooding effects.
Several D and I structures under construction were inspected and updates on their progress were given.

Minister Persaud called for the co-operation of residents to assist in maintaining these structures as they are the ones who will benefit.
He told residents that additional equipment have been purchased and will be deployed to the areas as soon as possible while works are also being catered for in 2008.            One of the main activities to be carried out is construction of the Abary/Berbice main canal between the Mahaicony and Abary Creeks. The seven-mile canal, which will be built from First Savannah to Jugdeo Canal, when completed will provide better drainage and irrigation for18, 000 acres of land used mainly for rice cultivation and cattle rearing.

The Mahaicony façade drain will be extended from Cape Clear in a northerly direction that will take discharge close to the mouth of the Mahaicony Creek while a structure will be constructed at Gordon Table.
Minister Persaud said all the efforts are aimed at improving agricultural development within the MMA/ADA area and providing more efficient drainage to surrounding communities.
