Agriculture Minister, IFAD to finalise negotiations for rural project

Georgetown, GINA, November 21, 2007.

Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud is likely to finalise negotiations with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) for the Rural Enterprise and Agricultural Development Project (READ), during meetings in Rome, Italy, from November 22 to 24, 2007.
The Minister departed Guyana yesterday to participate in meetings of IFAD and the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).
READ, which is estimated to cost US$6M is intended to increase the incomes of rural households with focus on women and other vulnerable groups by linking producers to markets.
It is aimed at strengthening producers, women, youth and local organizations to support growth and sustainability of enterprises and development of targeted communities. Additionally, the initiative aims to alleviate poverty and promote income generating activities through agricultural and rural diversification with emphasis on non-traditional products.
While in Italy, Minister Persaud will participate in the 34th Session of the FAO Conference which will include five high-level events and a review of the state of food and agriculture in the world.
These events seek to enable member countries to exchange views on their experiences within the framework of a high-level forum which is focusing on the role of aquaculture in sustainable development; forests and energy; financing of agriculture; food quality and safety and aid for trade and food security.
Minister Persaud will also chair the 'Aid for Trade' symposium and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with FAO’s Director General Jacques Diouf for establishment of an office in Guyana.
FAO and IFAD have supported various initiatives by Government aimed at alleviating poverty, developing rural communities and increasing agricultural contributions. These include the Poor Rural Communities Support Services Project (PRCSSP), construction of the Mon Repos Aquaculture Station and funding for the Integrated Rice-Fish Project.
