Agriculture Minister updates Mahaica, Mahaicony farmers on drainage plans for rainy season
Georgetown, GINA, November 14, 2007
Minister of Agriculture Robert Persaud today met farmers of the Mahaicony and Mahaica areas as part of the Ministry’s programme in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.
Meetings were held at the Karamat Primary School, Mahaicony and the compound of the Biaboo Primary School, Mahaica. The meetings were held according to Minister Persaud to “inform them about some of the drainage activities the Ministry has ongoing and what they have planned, and to listen to their suggestions and feedback for any interventions they may need.”
Persaud noted that the two areas are especially vulnerable because they are low line areas which are more prone to flood. The Ministry has put a number of measures in place to reduce the possibility of flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

He said work was done on the Conservancy to increase its efficiency. This included creation of additional outlets to drain water into the Demerara River, strengthening of the embankment, and clearing and opening up of the waterways so that the flows to and from the Conservancy could be better regulated. The level of Conservancy, he assured residents, was being closely monitored.
Some of the works planned include spraying of the creeks to remove weeds and other growth that prevents the flow, raising the banks of some of the canals and clearing of canals.
The Minister noted that similar arrangements were earlier in the year for the May / June rainy season. Those arrangements were sucessful since the areas were not flooded.
Farmer raised some concerns which the Minister assured will be addressed by his Ministry.
