Minister Persaud inspects drainage & irrigation systems ahead of end-of-year rains

 Hon. Robert M. Persaud, Minister of Agriculture recently conducted inspections of the drainage and irrigation systems on the East and West Bank of Demerara in anticipation of the upcoming end of year rainy season.

During Minister Persaud’s visit he inspected ongoing works by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority to improve the Kofi Outfall Channel which is one of the main outlets for the East Demerara Water Conservancy. This project is expected to be completed at a total cost of (G) $36 million.

At the site visit, Minister Persaud urged the contractor to ensure the completion of the project in preparation of the end-of-year rains.

Further, a site visit was made to Supply/Brickery to inspect the rehabilitation of a drainage sluice and canal at a total coast of (G) $20 million. This project was realized after farmers made representation to the Minister of Agriculture to improve drainage within the Supply/Brickery area which is susceptible to water accumulation during the rainy season. 

In addition, an inspection was done to view the ongoing excavation works in the Number One Canal Main Drain after a survey was completed and the works were identified for the undertaking. The cost of this project is (G) $8 million which also includes cleaning and excavation of sections of the Number Canal Two Main Drain.
