Guyana and Beekeeping in Guyana

Guyana lies at the point where the Caribbean meets South America. It has incredibly wonderful lands of unspoiled beauty, where the virgin rainforest leads to the Amazon Basin. As the only English speaking country in South America, Guyana sits like a gem in the crown of the continent, defying the raging Atlantic Ocean.

Based on its untouched rainforest, Guyana has the potential to be one of the top producers of honey in the Caribbean. Guyana has been in the production of honey for many years with a Beekeepers’ Association formed in 1953 and once had a specialized Unit within the Ministry of Agriculture. Unfortunately the honey industry went into decline in the 1980’s. Efforts to revive the industry by the Government and Stakeholders started in 2000 and were intensified in 2006.

Traditionally the Italian Honey Bees were reared until 1974–75 when the Africanized Bees arrived in Guyana and they predominates the industry. The Africanized Bees at the time forced many producers out of business and those who remained had to adapt to this more aggressive bee.

Over the years most of the Bee Hives were located in the Pomeroom River, West Coast Berbice, Mahaica and Linden Soesdyke Highway. Recently Hives begin to appear in Regions 7, 8 and 9 – all Hinterland Regions of Guyana. While no statistics are readily available, it is crudely estimated that there are approximately 200 Beekeepers with over 1,500 Hives.

Invitation

The Ministry of Agriculture and the Guyana Beekeepers’ Association cordially extend an invitation to the Regional and International Beekeeping fraternity to attend and participate in the Fifth Caribbean Beekeeping Congress. This Congress of the Caribbean Beekeeping Community is a continuation of a series of Congresses started in Trinidad and Tobago in 1998, and continued in Nevis, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago in 2000, 2002 and 2005 respectively.

These Congresses provide a forum for meaningful discussion and exchange of ideas among individuals involved in the beekeeping industry. It has emerged as the most important event on the Regional Beekeeping Calendar.
