Summary of Preparation for the May/June 2007 Rains.

 National Drainage and Irrigation Authority

  1. Total Cost expended on preparations between January-May 2007:G$ 379.5 M
  2. The Government invested $3.8 Billion in drainage and irrigation for the past two years.
  3. 47 Projects are on-going in Regions 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 to prepare the current D&I system for the above normal (40% above) May/June rains.
  4. Farmers from Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Creeks benefited from two (2) days of free drainage works by government excavators amounting to 57 miles of canals, raising of flood embankments and building of high grounds for cattle. These works were completed at a total cost of $130-million.
  5. Regional D&I committees have been established to monitor the Drainage system during the May/June 2007 rains. The committees are chaired by the Regional Chairman.
  6. The acquisition of thirty thousand (30,000) sand bags as a precautionary measure is cases of overtopping in vulnerable areas.
  7. New machinery such as excavators (long reach), punts, pontoons and boats for the East Demerara Water Conservancy and bulldozers to upgrade D&I access dams.
  8. There are inter-agency meeting with Sea and River defence, NDIA, GUYSUCO, Civil Defence Commission, MMA, Conservancies representative, Regional Chairman No’s 2, 3,4,5,6 and 10. Also consultations are being held with the City Engineer’s Department.
  9. A communication centre is currently being established at the NDIA and will be completed shortly. In the meanwhile communications are being carried out using cell and landline phones.
  10. An established hotline for members of the public to make reports, receive clarifications and feedback on complaints relating to drainage and irrigation issues.
  11. There are 24 hrs monitoring personnel in the EDWC.
