WEATHER BRIEF for Thursday 17 th April 2008 from the Hydrometeorological Service, Guyana

Rainfall records for the rainfall day (8-8) measured at 08:00 hrs was available from most of our stations; Skeldon in Region 6, recorded 21.2mm /0.83inch of rainfall, which was the highest amount.

 

Weather: Shallow to moderate convective and some layer clouds, were observed over the forecast area, with brief showers, over some areas.

Forecast for Thursday April, 17 th 2008 (evening) to Wednesday, 23rd April 2008 (day)

The weather tonight, tomorrow and Saturday is expected to be mostly cloudy, becoming overcast at times, with showers, and possible light intermittent rain, over some areas, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, are expected to be wet and Wednesday very wet. Forecasted rainfall is expected to rage between 0 to 20mm over some areas.

 

R ainfall stations can expect an average of less than10.0mm or 0.4 inch of rainfall in a 24 hour period. On days with rainfall some locations may measure about 20.0mm or0.8inch.

~ Mabaruma normal is computed using data 1951 to 1980. The average for Wismar is computed using data between 1998 and 2005. In 1945, the highest ever-recorded daily rainfall in Georgetown (1882 –2007) for April was 137.9mm (5.43ins). In April 2007, a maximum daily rainfall of 62.6mm (2.46ins) was recorded on the 4 th.

 

Latest (16-04-2008) sea surface temperature anomaly was -0.5˚C to 1.5˚C in the Tropical Pacific along the equator from west coast of South America. La Niña conditions continue in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific and there is 85% probability of the Pacific Ocean maintaining La Niña conditions over April and May 2008. The forecast models indicate there are reasonably high probabilities of normal to above normal rainfall during April – June 2008. Hydromet’s rainfall forecast for April 2008 is 1 in 10 for below normal, 6 in 10 for normal and 3 in 10 for above normal rainfall .

 

The long-term daily average rainfall for Georgetown, for the next 10 days 17 th April 2008 to 26 th April 2008 is 5.2/ 0.20ins per day . The table below shows the predicted occurrence of high tides from 17 th April to 21 st April 2008.

‘’Spring tides” are said to be occurring when heights are greater than or equal to 2.74m. Above chart datum.

 

‘’Spring Tides” advisory is in effect. The tides during this period are considered to be extreme. Hence, persons along the coast and other low lying areas are asked to be on alert at all times during this period to take the necessary precautions.
