More investment to improve Hydromet Services - Minister Persaud

 

The Hydrometeorological Service of the Ministry of Agriculture will benefit from G$7.2-million in training for four Meteorological Technicians in weather forecasting.

The eighteen-month course will commence on January 11, 2007 at the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology in Barbados. This course is also followed by

three months of on-the-job training.

It provides students with the basic theoretical background in dynamic, physical, and synoptic meteorology, while emphasizing the practical applications of this theory

to weather analysis and forecasting, particularly in the tropics. 

Hon. Robert M. Persaud, Minister of Agriculture, today met with the Chief Hydromet Officer (ag), Ms. Bhaleka Seulall and the officers who will be benefiting from the

training.  

He pointed out that the government funded training will be the first after six years and will be beneficial to the officers in boosting the capacity of the Hydroment Service.

The Minister further pointed out that last batch was in 2002. Minister Persaud stressed that the Government of Guyana is investing in this area to support the

Ministry of Agriculture in the planning of drainage and irrigation and crop patterns.

The officers to benefit from training includes:  Ms Morina Elliot – Meteorological Technician 1, Ms. Michelle Patterson –Meteorological Technician 11 (ag),

 Ms. Carshena Gordon - Meteorological Technician 1 and Ms. Ziona Michelle - Meteorological Technician 1.

In addition, the Minister also announced the reactivation of the Agricultural Meteorological Service within the Hydromet Service to compliment its current

service and support to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers.

Meanwhile, construction has recommenced on the Radar Project while staff from the Hydromet Service have been trained in Germany.
